What people say
The Moon exactly as it was on the night they were born: the phase, how much of it was lit and the sign it was in, calculated from the birth date and place and drawn as a fine art print with their name and birth details. The Moon itself is the real one: its seas, craters and highlands come from NASA's maps of the lunar surface, lit from the Sun's direction that night, so the shadows fall where they really fell.
It is drawn as it looked from where they were born. From Australia and New Zealand the Moon looks upside down compared with the north, so a Melbourne Moon and a London Moon on the same night are drawn differently. Most moon prints only show the northern view.
It doesn't have to be a birthday. Type your own words at the top, such as "The night we met" or "The night we said yes", and use the date of a first date, an engagement or a wedding.
What your moon phase is said to mean
For a birth. Astrologers have long read the phase you are born under as a clue to your nature. These eight types follow the lunar phase types described by the astrologer Dane Rudhyar, with a little old moon folklore. Your print shows your phase and its line, and your download page has the full meaning.
- New Moon: The beginner. Instinctive, spontaneous and open to the new. Old folklore says the New Moon is the lucky time for fresh starts.
- Waxing Crescent: The striver. Brave and hopeful, always pushing forward. Old folklore says a growing Moon brings a newborn strength and luck.
- First Quarter: The builder. Decisive and driven, at their best with something to get done. In folklore, prosperity grows as the Moon grows.
- Waxing Gibbous: The perfecter. Thoughtful and devoted, always refining, always asking how it could be better.
- Full Moon: The illuminator. Warm, aware and lit up by other people, someone who sees the whole picture.
- Waning Gibbous: The sharer. Wise and generous, a natural teacher who passes on what they know.
- Last Quarter: The reformer. Independent and questioning, often ahead of their time, ready to let go of what no longer works.
- Waning Crescent: The visionary. Intuitive and gentle, often called an old soul, with an eye on the future.
For a love story
Choose "A love story" when you add the details, enter the date and place of the night you met, got engaged or married, and type both names. The top says "The moon on the night we met" (or your own words), and the line under the Moon is about your love instead of a personality. A lovely anniversary, engagement or wedding gift.
- New Moon: A love that began in the dark, made for fresh starts.
- Waxing Crescent: A love that grows a little brighter every night.
- First Quarter: A love brave enough to choose each other.
- Waxing Gibbous: A love that keeps getting better.
- Full Moon: A love that shines with nothing hidden.
- Waning Gibbous: A love that shares everything it has.
- Last Quarter: A love that knows what to keep and what to let go.
- Waning Crescent: A love that feels like you have met before.

Good to know
What if I don't know the birth time?
You don't need it. The date and place are enough for the phase. A birth time makes it exact to the hour; without one the print uses that day, says how much was lit as "about", and only names the Moon's sign if it stayed in one sign all day.
Is that the real Moon?
Yes. The surface is built from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter maps of the Moon (public domain, credit NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio), projected as the Moon faces Earth and lit for the phase on your date. The colours are ours: gold on cream, natural on midnight, rose on blush.
Why does my Moon look different from other moon prints?
Because it is drawn from where you were born. From the Southern Hemisphere the Moon looks upside down compared with the north, so a waxing Moon is lit on the left, not the right. The print says so in small text at the bottom.
Can I use a date that isn't a birthday?
Yes. When you add the details, choose "A love story", enter the date and place of the night you met, got engaged or married, and type both names. The print then says "The moon on the night we met" with a line about your love. You can change the words at the top too, for example "The night we said yes". Prefer no line at all? Choose "Just the moon".
Can I have it printed or framed?
Yes. Choose A4 or A3, unframed or framed in black, white or natural wood, and we post it to you in Australia, New Zealand, the US or Canada, postage included. It is printed on thick matte paper. After you add the details you see your print and choose the colour, and it only goes to the printer once you confirm it. You get the digital files too. Australian orders arrive in 4 to 9 business days (9 to 12 for an A3 frame in white or natural wood), and we email you the tracking link.
Do you post outside Australia?
Yes, to New Zealand, the US and Canada, postage included: usually 2 to 10 business days. Prices are in Australian dollars and your card converts them. Somewhere else? Choose Digital and print it locally: the files are ready for any print shop.
Who is it good for?
Birthdays, a new baby or christening, a partner or anniversary, a wedding or engagement, Mother's Day, or anyone who loves the Moon.
Will the colours match my screen?
Colours can look slightly different on screen and on paper, depending on the printer and paper.
