Most people who learn their Human Design stop at the type. Generator, Projector, that is me, done. But the single most useful thing in the whole chart is usually the authority, because it answers a practical question: how do I make a decision I will not regret?
What authority means
In Human Design, every chart has nine centres, and each is either defined (coloured in, a consistent source of energy) or open (white, taking in energy from other people). Your authority is the defined centre that, according to the system, has the final say on decisions. It is worked out in a fixed order: if the Solar Plexus is defined, it is Emotional, no matter what else is defined. If not, the Sacral. If not, the Spleen, and so on down the list. That is why two people of the same type can decide in very different ways.
The seven authorities, in plain words
Emotional (Solar Plexus)
About half of all people. Your feelings move in a wave, up and down over hours or days, and the system's advice is simple: there is no truth in the now. Never say yes or no at the peak or the trough. Sleep on it. If the same answer is still there once the wave has settled, trust it. Emotional authority people are often pushed into fast decisions by other people's urgency, and that is where the regret comes from.
Sacral
Only Generators and Manifesting Generators. Your gut answers in the moment, before your mind catches up, with a feeling of yes (a lift, an uh-huh) or no (a drop, an uh-uh). The trick is that the Sacral responds, it does not initiate: it needs a question to answer. Ask a friend to put yes or no questions to you and notice the sound you make before you think.
Splenic
The Spleen is the body's instinct for survival, health and timing, and it speaks once, quietly, in the moment. It does not repeat itself. People with Splenic authority often say they knew straight away and then talked themselves out of it. The practice is to act on the first instinct before the mind argues.
Ego (Heart)
Rare. The question is not what you should do but what you want, and whether you have the will to see it through. Ego authority people make good decisions by speaking their desire out loud and noticing whether their heart is really in it.
Self-Projected (G centre)
Projectors only. The truth comes out in your own voice. Talk the decision through with people you trust, not for their advice but so you can hear yourself. What you keep saying is the answer.
Mental (also called Environmental, or None)
Projectors with no defined centre below the Throat. Decisions come from talking things through with trusted people, in environments that feel right, over time. The body's response to a place and a person is the data.
Lunar
Reflectors only. With no defined centres, the advice is to give big decisions a full lunar cycle, about 28 days, and talk them through as the month goes by.
How to use yours this week
Pick one real decision, something small. Then decide it the way your authority says, not the way you usually do. If you are Emotional, wait a day. If you are Sacral, get someone to ask you yes or no. If you are Splenic, go with the first instinct and watch what happens. Human Design calls this the experiment, and it is the only honest way to find out whether the system works for you.
You need an exact birth time
Authority depends on which centres are defined, and that is calculated from your birth moment and a moment about three months before it. The chart can change within hours, so Human Design needs a birth time to the minute or within about half an hour. If you do not know yours, see how to find your birth time.
Your type, authority, profile, centres and channels with your bodygraph, from your birth details. Instant.
Questions
Which Human Design authority is the most common?
Emotional authority, held by roughly half of all people. Sacral is next.
Can my authority change?
No. It is calculated from your birth data and stays the same for life. What changes is how well you use it.
What is the difference between strategy and authority?
Strategy is about how opportunities should reach you (for example, waiting to respond). Authority is about how you say yes or no once they have.
